Arrive at any time. There are no planned activities until the Welcome Meeting in the evening. The nearest airport is Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM). Consider arriving 1-2 days early to explore the city, adjust to the time zone, and buffer against flight delays. We can request extra hotel nights for you before the program begins. Hotel Check-in and Welcome Meeting Hotel check-in is normally between 2–3 p.m. Check with reception for the exact time and location of the group welcome meeting, typically between 6–7 p.m. Please make every effort to attend this meeting. If you're running late, send a message in the group WhatsApp or call the emergency number on your trip voucher so that your tour leader can let you know where and when to meet the group. After the meeting, you might choose to get dinner at a nearby restaurant with your traveling companions and your tour leader to further get to know one another. Lima Cooking Class: If you book this optional activity, we recommend booking a pre-trip hotel night. Participants will be picked up from the group hotel at ~10:00 a.m. and taken to a local market and restaurant to prepare a traditional Peruvian meal. They will return to the group hotel around 1:00 p.m. The Lima Cooking Class comes highly recommended for families with children keenly interested in cooking, and learning more about local cuisine and ingredients. Please note, the pisco sour offered during the cooking class is for adults only.

Fly from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, deep in the lowlands of the Amazon jungle. Travel by motorized canoe to our lodge in the Tambopata rainforest area, which holds the world record for the most bird sightings in one area. During the voyage, take the opportunity to see bird species typical of the river or forest edge, such as black skimmers, pied lapwings, capped herons, Jabiru storks, roadside hawks, and several species of kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers. Depending on flight arrival times, enjoy either a boxed lunch aboard the boat or lunch upon arrival at the lodge. Rubber boots are provided at the lodge. The lodge itself combines native architectural style and materials with low-impact, eco-friendly technology. Rooms are simple but comfortable, with mosquito netting for individual beds, flush toilets, showers (no hot water), and kerosene lamps for lighting (no electricity). Local community members make up the majority of lodge staff, including multilingual naturalist guides. Take the opportunity to learn from them about the area’s rich flora and fauna, and their extensive practical uses for medicinal plants and other forest plant resources through traditional techniques for building, fishing, and hunting. Approximate travel time: 2.5 hrs by flight, 2-3 hrs by motorized canoe Accommodation: Tambopata Lodge (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Enjoy visits to oxbow lakes and small clay licks to learn about the jungle and its inhabitants. Be introduced to the area’s rich flora and fauna by expert naturalist guides, who can teach extensive uses for medicinal and other forest plant resources through traditional techniques. Be prepared to go early morning or evening to avoid the heat of midday. Enjoy a leisurely pace – the trip requires some walking, but nothing too strenuous. Accommodation: Tambopata Lodge (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

This morning, transfer by boat and then fly to Cusco, where you will spend the rest of the day relaxing and exploring this fascinating city, and – most importantly – getting used to the altitude. Please take it easy on your first day as strenuous activity can exacerbate symptoms of altitude sickness. This vibrant city has endless streets, monuments, and markets to discover that will fire the imagination and capture the heart. You will be returning to Cusco for a full free day later on in the trip, which will give you more time to explore. Approximate travel time: 3 hrs by motorized canoe, 1-1.5 hrs by flight, Accommodation: Taypikala Hotel Cusco (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Today we will travel from Cusco, through the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes. The group will be picked up in the morning by a private vehicle at the hotel in Aguas Calientes. The first stop is the small village of Caccaccollo and the Planeterra Women's Weaving co-op. Your group will visit a community center built with support from GEEO and G Adventures travelers. Here, your family can meet the women of the weaving co-op and learn about traditional weaving and dyeing techniques. Discover how the co-op has impacted both the community and its visitors, and enjoy the opportunity to purchase handmade souvenirs directly from the artisans. Next, we travel to Ollantaytambo, a town with an Incan fortress strategically situated overlooking the beautiful Urubamba River valley. This major ruin site is known as the best surviving example of Inca urban planning and engineering. It is admired for its huge steep terraces guarding the Inca Fortress and for being one of the few places where the Spanish lost a major battle during the conquest. We will board a scenic train to get to Aguas Calientes village, passing by through the Urubamba Valley. There we will check into our hotel with some time left over for exploring. Approximate travel time: 2 hrs by private vehicle, 1.5 hrs by train, Accommodation: Hotel Taypikala Machupicchu (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Machu Picchu is both the most magnificent and the least understood of the Inca ruins. It is not mentioned in any of the chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors, and archaeologists today can do no more than speculate on its function. The local Quechua farmers in the area knew of Machu Picchu for centuries, but it was not until an 11-year-old boy led the American historian Hiram Bingham (who was in search of Vilcabamba) to the site on July 24, 1911, that the rest of the world became aware of its existence. At that time, the site was covered in thick vegetation, and Bingham and his team returned in 1912 and 1915 to clear the growth. Over the years, much work has been done on excavating and studying the site. Despite these efforts, many unanswered questions remain. Set off with the local guide to explore Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. Learn about the history and gain insights into this massive mountaintop citadel while wandering through ancient dwellings, stone temples and along sculpted terraces. Feel the energy of this 15th-century site, now both a UNESCO World Heritage site and voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide internet poll. After touring the ruins, you'll have the opportunity to soak in the nearby thermal baths at our lunch stop. We'll then return by train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy and then transfer by van to Cusco, where we will check into our hotel. Approximate travel time: 1.5-2 hrs by train; 1.5-2 hrs by private vehicle Accommodation: Taypikala Hotel Cusco (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

We'll start the day with an included visit to the Chocolate Museum in Cusco to learn about the history of chocolate, the process of making it, and the story of the truffle. Then try your hand at creating your own truffles with a cooking lesson. After preparing these delicious treats you'll be able to enjoy them and take some with you to snack on later. Every year, Cusco attracts thousands of travellers who come to delve into its noble but tragic past. There are many impressive Incan sites to visit as well as museums. We recommend taking an optional guided tour of the city and getting a tourist ticket. Accommodation: Taypikala Hotel Cusco (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Today we have some more time to see the sites of Cusco before flying to Lima. The evening is the last chance for a dinner with our group. Peruvian food is now becoming world-renowned. Opt to try some delicious ceviche, juicy lomo saltado, or perhaps guinea pig. Approximate travel time: 1.5-2 hrs by plane Accommodation: Hotel Antigua Miraflores (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

There are no planned activities today, so you may depart Lima at any time. If you wish to extend your stay in Lima, consider booking post-tour accommodation with us. Please note that check-out time from the hotel is usually mid-morning, but luggage storage services are available at the reception desk. Want more adventure? Book two or more GEEO programs in the same school year and receive a discount! GEEO will give you 10% off of the lesser value program(s) (up to 3 programs per year). Meals included: Breakfast

*Itinerary Disclaimer: While it is our intention to adhere to the routes described on our website, there is a certain amount of flexibility built into the itinerary and on occasion it may be necessary, or desirable, to make alterations. The itinerary is brief, as we never know exactly where our journey will take us. Due to our style of travel and the regions we visit, travel can be unpredictable. The information on our website is a general guide to the tour and region, and any mention of specific destinations or wildlife is by no means a guarantee that they will be visited or encountered. Additionally, any travel times listed are approximations only and subject to vary due to local circumstances.

      Details

      Important

Before you decide to travel with GEEO, it is important that you read all of the program information on this page. Our programs are quite adventurous, and we find that travelers who review the full trip details are happier with their experiences.

      Trip Notes & Expectations

      MACHU PICCHU REGULATIONS

Current and correct passport details are required at time of confirmation. For more details please see this page. Please also note that regulations have been implemented for all visitors to Machu Picchu which require that different circuits be followed within the site as a way to relieve crowding. The new circuit-based entrance tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We will do all that is possible to get everyone traveling in a group on the same route, but be aware that it is possible that members of the same group might be visiting Machu Picchu on a different circuit and not be together during this visit. Rest assured that regardless of the circuit you will enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the site.

      TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AT ALTITUDE

Your adventure will take you to high altitudes, medically defined as over 2,440 m (8,000 ft). While most people experience minimal effects, altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness or age. In rare cases, severe reactions may require returning to lower altitudes. Consult your doctor for advice on how to prepare and ensure any medications you need are safe to use at elevations over 11,000 feet. When at altitude, children are no more susceptible to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) than adults. However, it is harder to notice the affects of AMS in children as it can be harder for them to communicate the symptoms. Some of the symptoms of AMS are similar to those of jet-lag, or a change in food. Make sure to keep an eye on your children's behaviour while at altitude, and ensure that they continue to drink plenty of water, and take it easy for the first couple of days you are at a high altitude.

      ADULT TO MINOR RATIO

Please note that on all Family Adventures one adult can only accompany up to two minors. If you have over two minors planning on traveling then a second adult will be required to attend.

      CPAP USERS

Please be aware that the usage of CPAP machines in not possible at the Tambopata Lodge.

      YELLOW FEVER

As of May 2025 , the CDC recommends yellow fever vaccination for travelers visiting Machu Picchu and its surrounding areas. Vaccination is not required for entry into Peru, but if you choose to receive the vaccine, be aware that it takes 10 days to become effective.

      ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation for family trips has been chosen to give the best location and facilities for your family. They may vary depending on the location and destination, but are designed to give the most comfortable experience while travelling. You and your family will generally be sharing rooms on a twin or triple share basis. These rooms will be either adjoining or located at close proximity to each other. Families will be roomed together and not with other families everywhere we stay. If you have any special hotel requests at the time of booking, let us know and we will do what we can to accommodate them.

      HOT WATER

Please note that hot water shortages and power outages can be fairly common in Peru, even in upgraded hotels and private homes. We appreciate your patience and understanding that these occurrences are outside of our control.

      LIMA TAXIS

Be cautious when taking taxis in Lima . Avoid hailing taxis from the street, as some may be unofficial and unsafe. Always have your hotel or a reliable location, like a museum, call a taxi for you. Before getting in, be aware of your route and ensure the driver avoids side roads in the Callao neighborhood.

      GROUP LEADER

All GEEO programs are led by a G Adventures Chief Experience Officer (CEO), whose role is to take the hassle out of travel and help you get the most from your trip. They’ll share information about the places you visit, suggest activities and restaurants, and introduce you to our local friends. While not traditional guides, CEOs have broad knowledge of the region’s history, culture, and daily life. On some excursions, local guides are used for deeper insight.

      Packing List
See our blog post of staff-recommended gear to help you pack for your upcoming travels. You must be able to carry your own luggage—up stairs, on and off of transport, and during 15 to 20 minute walks. Bring one small or medium backpack or rolling bag (22-30lb) and one daypack for daily items. Space is limited on transportation, so oversized bags cannot travel. Internal Flight Restrictions: There may be a weight restriction for the internal flight on this program. Additional bags or excess weight charges may apply. These charges are the responsibility of the passengers. Packing for the Amazon:During the Amazon portion of this trip, travelers are required to store their main luggage on shore and bring only a small bag with clothes and essentials onto the boat. If you do not have a small bag, a duffel will be provided to you at no cost. As you prepare your packing list, we recommend checking average weather conditions for your destination.

      Passports and Visas
Travelers are responsible for securing all required travel documents and meeting the entry requirements for every country on their itinerary, including applicable transit/layover countries. PASSPORT All travelers must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your trip dates with enough blank pages for stamps. Need to apply or renew? Start here. ENTRY/VISA REQUIREMENTS Visa rules change frequently—always verify the latest requirements on the U.S. State Department Country Information Pages. Non-U.S. passport holders should verify requirements with your country's official government resources. Use the tool below to see entry requirements for your specific itinerary. Entry information below is provided by Sherpa, a third-party service and trusted G Adventures partner. You must search each of your destination countries separately; “Add connection” solely searches transit visa requirements. Additional fees apply if you choose to purchase any services through Sherpa.
      Money Exchange
Currency: The local currency in Peru is the Sol (PEN). For current exchange rates, visit www.xe.com. Credit/Debit Cards: Credit cards (especially Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at many hotels, shops, and restaurants, but not everywhere. Some vendors may also charge an international transaction fee, so check with your bank before you travel. Cash: For small purchases, tipping, or places that don’t take cards, we recommend using ATMs to withdraw local currency while traveling. If you bring U.S. dollars to exchange, the bills must be new, unmarked, and in excellent condition—damaged or older notes are often rejected. Emergency Funds: Bring at least $200 USD (or the equivalent in local currency) in cash for emergencies in case of ATM or card issues. Always carry more rather than less to avoid feeling short of funds while traveling. See the Estimated Trip Costs section at the bottom of this page for budgeting guidance. For more advice, see our post, Smart Travel Finances: Your Guide to Money, ATMs, Fees, and Safety Abroad
      Tipping
Tipping is optional but appreciated and goes a long way for the people who look after you on the trip. If you are happy with the service, use these ballpark amounts and adjust as you see fit: - Service providers/Waiters: 10% of the bill. - Local guides and drivers: $5-10 USD per person per day. - G Adventures tour leader (CEO): $20-25 USD per person per week. (We suggest pooling contributions in an envelope and presenting it as a group) Tipping Kitty: On some trips, your CEO may suggest a “tipping kitty” where everyone contributes at the start of the tour, and the CEO uses that pooled amount to tip service providers for the group as a whole (not including your CEO). If your CEO doesn’t mention it and you’d like to use a kitty, we recommend asking about it early in the trip. Your CEO will advise the suggested amount and preferred currency for the kitty.
      Vaccinations
GEEO cannot provide any medical advice, so it is very important to consult your doctor or a travel clinic about which vaccinations you will need for your trip. We recommend contacting Passport Health, which has travel clinics located throughout the United States. You can also check the CDC's recommended vaccinations for your destination. Please take this seriously! Yellow Fever Note: Some countries on GEEO programs may require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination if you are arriving from or transiting through countries with risk of Yellow Fever transmission. This includes long layovers (typically over 12 hours) in affected countries. The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before entry to be considered valid. Always check with your health provider and the official entry requirements of each country to determine if you need a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate.
      Flights
Wait for official trip confirmation via email from GEEO before booking your flights. Prices tend to be lowest 90–120 days out, but that window varies by route and year. Neither GEEO nor G Adventures bear responsibility for any flights purchased before the trip is confirmed. This program begins and ends in Lima. Please double-check our itinerary for the date by which you must arrive in Lima. You may want to arrive in La Lima or more days early in case you have flight disruptions. You can arrive at any time you choose, but try to make it in time for our 6:00 p.m. Welcome Meeting on Day 1. You can depart from Lima any time on the final day of the program.
      Plugs and Converters
Peru uses Type A, Type B, and Type C outlets, and the voltage is typically 220V. To use your electronics safely, you’ll need to consider: 1. Adapter (plug shape) Adapts your U.S. plug to fit another type of socket. See our recommended all-in-one travel adapter in our Gear Recommendations post. 2. Converter / transformer (voltage) Steps the outlet voltage down to 120V for U.S. appliances that can’t handle higher voltage. Check what you need: Look on your device's plug or power brick. “Input: 100-240V” works worldwide—you only need a plug adapter. Any range narrower (e.g., "110-120V" or “Input: 120V”) means you need an adapter and a voltage converter to avoid damage. Converters are inexpensive and available online or in travel stores.
      Weather
At this time of year, Lima is typically a bit rainy with a mild temperature. The Amazon will have day temperatures in the 80s and nights in the 60s. There is a good chance you will have at least some rain. The Andes, where you will spend most of your trip, tend to be cold and dry, but it does sometimes rain in the area. You should pack different layers of clothes so you can adjust throughout the day. Make sure you have plenty of warm clothing, as it gets really cold on the Inca Trail at night. Because we are at a high altitude, the sun can be quite strong so sunblock and a hat are essential.

      Advice From Past Participants
"Most banks were very strict about the condition of the money we wanted to exchange. They wanted money without lines, cracks, tears, even bends in the middle. I would stress that each bill will be inspected and that they will reject money with tears, lines, and/or marks." "Be prepared to buy loads of bottled water. The other option is to bring a water bottle with a filter. CamelBak makes an excellent one for under $100." "The Larco Museum in Lima is a great way to start off your trip if you arrive early. It will provide context for what you learn about the rest of the trip."
