Arrive at any time. There are no planned activities until the Welcome Meeting in the evening. The Athens airport is Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH). Consider arriving 1-2 days early to explore the city, adjust to the time zone, and buffer against flight delays. We can book extra hotel nights for you before the trip. Hotel Check-in and Welcome Meeting Hotel check-in is normally between 2-3pm. Check with reception for the exact time and location of the group welcome meeting, typically between 6-7pm. Please make every effort to attend this meeting. If you're running late, send a message in the group WhatsApp or call the emergency number on your trip voucher so your tour leader can let you know where and when to meet the group. After the meeting, you might choose to get dinner at a nearby restaurant with your traveling companions and your tour leader to further get to know one another. Note: Like many GEEO programs in Europe, this trip uses public transportation. This means you will need to have luggage you can easily carry with you up and down stairs, on and off ferries, etc.

      • Joining Instructions
      • Taxi: (€38-50 | ~45min) Available at the airport.
      • Metro: (€10 | ~1hr) Take the M3 line toward Agia Marina from Athens International Airport. After 16 stops (~40 min), get off at Monastiraki Station. From there, either walk 15 minutes (1.3 km) to the hotel, or transfer to the M1 Metro for 1 stop (2 min) to Omonia Station. The hotel is a 2-minute walk from Omonia Station: exit the station, head west on Pl. Omonias toward 3is Septemvriou, turn right onto 3is Septemvriou, then right onto Chalkokondili.
Accommodation: Parnon Hotel Athens (or similar) * For the actual hotel your specific departure will be using, please check your voucher.

Take a ferry ride from Athens to the island of Tinos. Once the group arrives take advantage of a full free day on the island to roam as you please. Tinos has great food, wild beauty, and even better surfing and hiking, so you won’t want to waste any time. Climb up the hillsides for magnificent views of the deep blue waters and pristine beaches. Approximate travel time: 4 hrs by ferry Accommodation: Favie Suzanne Hotel Tinos (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

This morning, we will island hop over to gorgeous Mykonos for a day trip. Explore Greece’s most famous cosmopolitan island. Named for the grandson of the Greek God Apollo, Mykonos has something for everyone. A vibrant nightlife, stunning beaches, and historic sites draw in all kinds of travelers, including celebrities, families, and students. Visit the local windmills and maybe enjoy a cocktail on a veranda overlooking Little Venice. We'll travel back to Tinos in the evening by ferry. Approximate travel time: 1-1.5 hrs by ferry Accommodation: Favie Suzanne Hotel Tinos (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Enjoy a six-hour tour of the island with a local guide. The first stop on the tour is Dio Choria village, where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a coffee with a view of the Aegean Sea. Then it’s on to Volax village, situated in the heart of Tinos. The landscape is very rocky. Many of the locals weave baskets, which you can buy during your time there. The third stop will be to the village of Pirgos, which is the birthplace of famous artists, painters, and sculptors. From there, travel onwards to Ktikados, where you will try some Greek dishes at one of the taverns, before the group returns to Tinos port via the village of Tarampados. Afterwards, take advantage of a free evening to keep exploring Tinos on your own. Accommodation: Favie Suzanne Hotel Tinos (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch

Leave Tinos behind and travel by ferry to Naxos. Set out on a guided orientation tour of Naxos before visiting the Temple of Apollo. Built around 530 BC, the Portara towers over the busy harbour and is the best place to watch the sunset in Naxos. Made of marble columns that weigh up to 20 tonnes each, the Portara serves as the "doorway" to the island's unfinished Temple of Apollo. From the mainland, walk across a paved path to reach this scenic lookout over the Aegean Sea. Afterwards, enjoy some free time. Maybe stop at the Temple of Dimitra, a local microbrewery, or the Church of Droisiani to see the 6th-century wall paintings. Take in the view of Mt Zeus at Zas Cave and grab a meal at a local tavern before capping off the evening at Apollonas beach. Approximate travel time: 2 hrs by ferry Accommodation: Naxos Holidays Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Enjoy a full free day in Naxos! There are many options. You can visit the castle on the hill built by a Venetian emperor in 1207, and its archaeological museum. You could also hike up Mount Zas for panoramic views of Naxos and bragging rights that you stood on the highest point in the Cyclades. The hike is 7km round trip and 300m of elevation gain. You can spend some time exploring traditional villages around the island. Wander through alleyways that wind their way up the hillside, and across quaint town squares with incredible views of the region's famous whitewashed houses (with much fewer crowds than Santorini). Observe the strong Venetian influence in Naxian architecture, as seen in local windmills and churches. And of course, you can relax on the beautiful beaches of Naxos - there's no shortage of them across the island! Sparkling blue waters, pristine sandy beaches, and unforgettable sun-kissed weather make "beach hopping" an activity you can't miss, whether you opt to lay on the beach or spend an active day by the sea. Accommodation: Naxos Holidays Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Jump on the ferry to the island of Santorini. Upon arrival, the group will enjoy a guided caldera cliff walk from Santorini's main town of Fira to the village of Oia, famous for its windmills. You'll pass through the villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli between Fira and Oia. At just under 11 km (About 6.5 miles) the hike will take between 3 and 4 hours. Part of the path is similar to a sidewalk and some parts are cobblestone and others a simple dirt path. Enjoy the exercise and some of the best views in Santorini. Afterwards, you have the option of attending dinner with the group for your final night in Santorini. Approximate travel time: 3 hrs by ferry Accommodation: Hotel Santorini (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

There are no planned activities today, so you may depart at any time. The tour ends in Santorini, and the nearest airport is Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR). If you wish to extend your stay in Santorini, consider booking post-tour accommodation with us. Please note that check-out time from the hotel is usually mid-morning, but luggage storage services are available at the reception desk. Want more adventure? Book two or more GEEO programs in the same school year and receive a discount! GEEO will give you 10% off of the lesser value program(s) (up to 3 programs per year). If you would like to extend your time abroad but don't see another GEEO program that interests you, let us know. We can work with you to find a trip from our tour operator’s much larger catalog. Their tours are open to the general public and not designed specifically for educators, but we can still offer you and your travel companions a discounted educator price on any additional tours that you book. Meals included: Breakfast

*Itinerary Disclaimer: While it is our intention to adhere to the routes described on our website, there is a certain amount of flexibility built into the itinerary and on occasion it may be necessary, or desirable, to make alterations. The itinerary is brief, as we never know exactly where our journey will take us. Due to our style of travel and the regions we visit, travel can be unpredictable. The information on our website is a general guide to the tour and region, and any mention of specific destinations or wildlife is by no means a guarantee that they will be visited or encountered. Additionally, any travel times listed are approximations only and subject to vary due to local circumstances.

      Details

      Important

Before you decide to travel with GEEO, it is important that you read all of the program information on this page. Our programs are quite adventurous, and we find that travelers who review the full trip details are happier with their experiences.

      Trip Notes & Expectations

      ACCOMMODATION

Our program fees are based on double-occupancy accommodation (see "Single Travelers" below if you do not have a travel companion and would be interested in a private room). Our accommodations are chosen to provide a safe, conveniently located place to sleep. While you may be pleasantly surprised, please don't expect luxury, as we prioritize keeping our programs affordable. Single/Private Rooms: Single room accommodations in European hotels are often smaller, and may not be to the same service level as double-occupancy rooms.

      LUGGAGE

We use public transport on this trip, which means you will need to carry your luggage from place to place and possibly up multiple flights of stairs. For example, there will be a 15-minute walk with your luggage from the ferry to the hotel in Tinos. Please also be aware that properties we stay in with only two stories may not have elevators installed, and climbing the stairs with your luggage will be necessary. It is essential, therefore, that you pack light and bring luggage that is compact and lightweight. Carrying your luggage remains your responsibility at all times.

      ORIENTATION WALKS

The orientation walking tours on this trip are often on cobblestone roads at steep grades and can last several hours in the heat of the summer. Feel free to opt-out of these walking tours if you wish to, as they can be very physically taxing. In some cases, on the other side of the coin, they may move a bit too slow for you. If you have a map, a travel app, or a guidebook, feel free to go off on your own. GEEO wants you to have the experience you desire, and sometimes that means separating yourself at times from the group.

      LOCAL GUIDES

In Europe, all guiding is based around local guides, all of whom are licensed to work only in a particular city. As such, our leaders are able to provide orientation walks that will give you the layout of each town and city, as well as the location of local services such as laundromats and ATMs, but are legally not permitted to share historical details in public places. Your tour leader will be able to help you find a local guided tour in each location if you would like one.

      PRE-BOOKING ACTIVITIES

During high season in Europe (May-October) we highly recommend booking reservations for any popular optional activities/museum tickets etc. in advance to avoid encountering sold-out activities on the ground while on tour.

      GROUP LEADER

All GEEO/G Adventures trips are led by a Chief Experience Officer (CEO), whose role is to take the hassle out of travel and help you get the most from your trip. They’ll share information about the places you visit, suggest activities and restaurants, and introduce you to our local friends. While not traditional guides, CEOs have broad knowledge of the region’s history, culture, and daily life. On some excursions, local guides are used for deeper insight—giving you the best of both worlds.

      Packing List
See our blog post of staff recommended gear to help you pack for your upcoming travels. You must be able to carry your own luggage—up stairs, on and off of transport, and during 15 to 20 minute walks. Bring one small or medium backpack or rolling bag (22-30lb) and one daypack for daily items. Space is limited on transportation, so oversized bags cannot travel. As you prepare your packing list, we recommend checking average weather conditions for your destination on a site like Weather Spark for the time of year you will be traveling.

      Passports and Visas
Travelers are responsible for securing all required travel documents and meeting the entry requirements for every country on their itinerary, including applicable transit/layover countries.  PASSPORT  All travelers must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your trip dates with enough blank pages for stamps. Need to apply or renew? Start here. ENTRY/VISA REQUIREMENTS  Visa rules change frequently—always verify the latest requirements on the U.S. State Department Country Information Pages. Non-U.S. passport holders should verify requirements with your country's official government resources. Use the tool below to see entry requirements for your specific itinerary.  Entry information below is provided by Sherpa, a third-party service and trusted G Adventures partner. You must search each of your destination countries separately; “Add connection” solely searches transit visa requirements. Additional fees apply if you choose to purchase any services through Sherpa.
      Money Exchange
Currency: Greece is part of the Eurozone and uses the common currency, the euro (EUR). For current exchange rates, visit www.xe.com. Credit/Debit Cards: Credit cards (especially Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at many hotels, shops, and restaurants, but not everywhere. Some vendors may also charge an international transaction fee, so check with your bank before you travel. Cash: For small purchases, tipping, or places that don’t take cards, we recommend using ATMs to withdraw local currency while traveling. If you bring U.S. dollars to exchange, the bills must be new, unmarked, and in excellent condition—damaged or older notes are often rejected. Emergency Funds: Bring at least $200 USD (or the equivalent in local currency) in cash for emergencies in case of ATM or card issues. Always carry more rather than less to avoid feeling short of funds while traveling. See the Estimated Trip Costs section at the bottom of this page for budgeting guidance. For more advice, see our post, Smart Travel Finances: Your Guide to Money, ATMs, Fees, and Safety Abroad
      Tipping
Tipping is optional but appreciated and goes a long way for the people who look after you on the trip. If you are happy with the service, use these ballpark amounts and adjust as you see fit: - Service providers/Waiters: €1-2 EUR for snacks or 10% of the bill. - Local guides and drivers: €3-5 EUR per person per day. - G Adventures tour leader (CEO): €30-40 EUR per person per week. (We suggest pooling contributions in an envelope and presenting it as a group) Tipping Kitty: On some trips, your CEO may suggest a “tipping kitty” where everyone contributes at the start of the tour, and the CEO uses that pooled amount to tip service providers for the group as a whole (not including your CEO). If your CEO doesn’t mention it and you’d like to use a kitty, we recommend asking about it early in the trip. Your CEO will advise the suggested amount and preferred currency for the kitty.
      Flights
Wait for official trip confirmation via email from GEEO before booking your flights. Prices tend to be lowest 90–120 days out, but that window varies by route and year. Neither GEEO nor G Adventures bear responsibility for any flights purchased before the trip is confirmed. This program begins in Athens and ends in Santorini. Please double-check our itinerary for the date by which you must arrive in Athens. You may want to arrive in Athens one or more days early in case you have flight disruptions. You can arrive at any time you choose, but try to make it in time for our 6:00 p.m. Welcome Meeting on Day 1. You can depart Santorini any time on the final day of the program. This itinerary only includes one full day in Athens. We recommend arriving a day or two early to see more of the city. We include one and a half days in Santorini, which is enough time to see the major sights. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world, so if you want to relax, spend some time on the beach, and explore more of the island, staying an extra day or two would be worthwhile.
      Plugs and Converters
Greece uses Type C outlets, and the voltage is 220-240V. To use your electronics safely, you’ll need to consider: 1. Adapter (plug shape) Adapts your U.S. plug to fit another type of socket. See our recommended all-in-one travel adapter in our Gear Recommendations post. 2. Converter / transformer (voltage) Steps the outlet voltage down to 120V for U.S. appliances that can’t handle higher voltage. How to know which you need: Look at the fine print on the plug or power brick. An “Input 100-240 V” means the device is dual-voltage and works worldwide with only an adapter—phones, laptops, and most camera chargers fall into this category. If the label shows “Input 120 V” (hair dryers, curling irons, some shavers), it could be damaged on high voltage. Pack both an adapter and a travel voltage converter. Converters are inexpensive and sold online or in the travel aisle of many stores.
      Weather
Greece is hot and dry in the summer, with temperatures typically in the 80s and 90s F.
      Advice From Past Participants
"If you ask for water at a meal in Greece, ask for tap water. Otherwise you pay for a bottle. Not a big deal, but we were initially surprised." "Money was easy to get at ATMs. I felt safe. Food was good. It is a hot and dry climate. People need to drink plenty of water." "Do not flush toilet paper. Instead throw it out in the little garbage can they have in each bathroom." "I had emailed GEEO before the trip to ask the best way to exchange money, and got the response that I could just use my debit card in any ATM (airport, etc), and it would automatically withdraw as euros. True. But what I didn't know, that would have saved me significant money, is that the ATM will ask you if you want to accept its exchange rate, and make it seem like you have no choice, and the exchange rate is awful. But you can actually click NO, it will not exit you out of the machine, it will just say that your bank will later determine the exchange rate. THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT. DO NOT ACCEPT THE REALLY BAD EXCHANGE RATES FROM THE ATM MACHINE!" "Two things: I highly recommend getting Euros from your bank in the USA exchanged before you travel. It costs absolutely nothing, and you get the maximum exchange rate. Some banks may have a small service fee if they have to order them for you ($5), but people who waited and used mac machines had to pay a lot more than I did. I would also NOT recommend the Athens City Pass. I bought the version that was supposed to include the Acropolis admissions fee, but when I got there they refused to accept it. I showed them all the paperwork, my receipt, QR code, etc. and their response was, "that is a separate company that has nothing to do with us." "Don't bring a jacket for rain and pack very light. There are opportunities to do laundry. Buy a Sim card for your phone." "Bring waterproof sandals. I did, but many did not, and most of the beaches are rock, not sand."

      ATHENSTINOSNAXOS
      ATHENS
Acropolis and Parthenon: €20 EUR per person

Discover the most famous of Athens’ eight hills: the Acropolis, the ultimate architectural and artistic expression of the ancient Athenian spirit. Visit the Parthenon, built for the Goddess Athena in 447 BC. This Greek temple, despite the gradual state of ruin and damage sustained over time, still symbolizes the key ideals of harmony and balance that defined the Classical style of Greek architecture.

Roman Agora: €2 EUR per person

Explore the ruins, located in the heart of modern Athens, which were once the site of the marketplace in ancient times. It was the political, cultural, social, and economic centre of the ancient world. The likes of Socrates, Plato, and affluent Athenians used to gather in the agora to discuss philosophy, political issues, exchange gossip, and trade.

National Archaeological Museum: €10 EUR per person

Take a tour of the National Archaeological Museum, home to some of the most important artifacts from ancient Greece. In the collection are various sculptures, vases, and metalworks. The museum is considered one of the most impressive archaeological museums in the world.

      Syntagma (Constitution) Square: Free

Most of Athens's important sights and interesting neighborhoods border this central square. The square was built in the early 19th century in front of the Old Royal Palace of King Otto of Greece. Walk around and admire the architecture, stop at a café and people-watch, or see the ceremonial changing of the guards called Evzones.

Acropolis Museum: €5 EUR per person

Visit the Acropolis Museum to see some of the artifacts and artworks discovered during excavations of the Acropolis. With over 25,000 square meters (82,020 ft), the museum is as interesting architecturally as the collection is historically. The museum is built over an archaeological dig site, and there is an impressive view of the Acropolis from the third floor.
