      Day 1: Zagreb Arrive in Zagreb at any time. Meet your group for a welcome meeting around 6:00 or 7:00 p.m., and then set off on a short orientation walk on the way to an optional group dinner.

      Arrive in Zagreb at any time. There are no planned activities until the Welcome Meeting in the evening. The nearest airport is Franjo Tuđman International Airport Zagreb (ZAG).

      Consider arriving 1-2 days early to explore the city, adjust to the time zone, and buffer against flight delays. We can request extra hotel nights for you before the program begins.

      Hotel Check-in and Welcome Meeting
      Hotel check-in is normally between 2–3 p.m. Check with reception for the exact time and location of the group welcome meeting, typically between 6–7 p.m. Please make every effort to attend this meeting. If you're running late, send a message in the group WhatsApp or call the emergency number on your trip voucher so that your tour leader can let you know where and when to meet the group.

      After the meeting, you might choose to join the group for dinner after a short orientation walk.

      • Public Bus: To travel from the airport to the central bus station (Zagreb Autobusni Kolodvor), take the Pleso Prijevoz bus operated by Croatia Airlines from outside the main international arrivals terminal. You can then walk (~15–20 min) to the hotel, or take the tram line 6 (Črnomerec) 10 stops to Glavni kolodvor and walk one block over to the hotel.
      • Taxi/Ride-Share: Available outside the terminal. A taxi to the hotel takes about 15 minutes and costs around €25–35. We recommend the ride-share app Bolt in Croatia, but Uber will work, too.
      • By Train: If you are arriving at Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor (the main station), the hotel is virtually across the street from the station's entrance/exit.

      Depart Zagreb and journey south into the Croatian countryside to Plitvice Lakes National Park, one of the country’s most celebrated natural sites. Spend the day exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site full of cascading waterfalls, terraced lakes, and forested trails. Follow wooden walkways that wind over and alongside the water, offering ever-changing perspectives on this remarkable karst environment.

      Continue to the hotel in the evening, check in, and relax before a delicious included dinner.

      Depart the hotel after breakfast and drive to Zadar on the Adriatic coast.

      In Zadar, enjoy a guided food experience that highlights regional specialties and the influence of Mediterranean flavors. Set out on a walking tour of the historic center, beginning along the waterfront near the Sea Organ and continuing through layers of history that include Roman ruins, medieval churches, and Venetian-era defenses. Along the way, your local guide will share insights into the city’s past, daily life, and regional traditions. The experience culminates in a hidden wine garden tucked inside a 16th-century structure, where you’ll sample a variety of traditional Dalmatian dishes paired with three local wines.

      Continue onward to Krka National Park, where a series of cascading waterfalls and river channels create a lush and dynamic landscape. Walk along wooden pathways that wind through the park, offering close-up views of the falls and surrounding ecosystems. The terrain is a mix of compact dirt and paved sections, with an elevation change of approximately 330 feet.

      By evening, arrive in Šibenik, a historic coastal town known for its stone architecture and relaxed atmosphere.

      Today offers a deeper look at life along the Dalmatian coast with an excursion to the nearby islands of Prvić and Zlarin. A short boat ride brings you to these small, car-free communities, where daily life moves at a slower pace shaped by the sea. Wander quiet lanes lined with stone houses, small churches, and gardens, and learn about traditional livelihoods such as fishing and coral harvesting. The visit provides a contrast to Croatia’s busier coastal hubs, highlighting the sustainability and challenges of small island living.

      Return to Šibenik in the afternoon with time to further explore its old town or relax along the waterfront.

      Depart Šibenik and travel south along the Adriatic coast to the port city of Split.

      Join your tour leader for an orientation walk of Split to get your bearings and to see some of the main sites. Split, a stunning walled city, is best known for the splendid palace erected by the Roman emperor Diocletian. Diocletian’s Palace was originally built as a retirement residence in the 4th century. Today, the palace is not a static monument but a living part of the city—its courtyards, alleyways, and stone walls are filled with shops, homes, and cafés.

      After time to wander and take in the unique setting in Split, continue along the coast to Makarska, dramatically situated between the Adriatic Sea and the rugged Biokovo mountain range. Check into the hotel and enjoy a free evening.

      Enjoy a full free day in Makarska, offering the flexibility to shape your experience. You might choose to relax along the town’s beaches, explore the promenade lined with cafés and restaurants, or take an optional excursion to nearby islands such as Brač.

      For those interested in more active pursuits, the surrounding landscape offers opportunities for hiking with sweeping coastal views. This pause in the itinerary provides a chance to recharge while taking in the natural beauty of the Dalmatian coast.

      Continue south along one of the Adriatic’s most scenic stretches, stopping near Ston for a hands-on look at local food production. Visit a family-run oyster farm in the sheltered waters of Mali Ston Bay, where you’ll learn about traditional aquaculture methods and sample fresh oysters harvested on-site. Stop at a rustic restaurant to taste some fresh oysters and have lunch with wine, everything sourced from local products of the region.

      Afterwards, explore the town of Ston, known for its extensive medieval defensive walls—often compared to a smaller version of the Great Wall—built to protect the region’s valuable salt works. Ston was an important military fort of the Ragusan Republic, and the defensive walls are world-famous. Originally more than 4.3 miles long, it was the second largest in the world after the Great Wall of China, and now up to 3.4 miles of it can still be explored. The wall rewards those who climb it with incredible views of the town and the surrounding mountains.

      Arrive in Dubrovnik later in the day, where the walled Old Town rises above the sea in striking fashion. Spend the rest of the evening at leisure.

      Begin the day with a guided walking tour of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its preservation and beauty. Walk along limestone streets polished by centuries of foot traffic, passing historic landmarks, churches, and fortified walls that reflect the city’s long maritime history. In addition to exploring its past, you’ll gain insight into present-day challenges through a visit to a local community initiative focused on recycling and environmental sustainability.

      Check out the environmentally-focused Maritimo Recycling, which turns plastic waste from the Adriatic Sea into useful products like fishing lures, sunglasses, and jewelry. The proceeds from the 3-D printed products fund future sea cleanups.

      The afternoon is free to continue discovering Dubrovnik—whether by walking the city walls for panoramic views, kayaking along the coastline, or simply soaking in the atmosphere of this iconic Adriatic city.

      Regroup in the evening for an optional final dinner out on the town.

The program ends in Dubrovnik, and the nearest airport is Dubrovnik Ruđer Bošković Airport (DBV), also referred to as Čilipi Airport.       Before you decide to travel with GEEO, it is important that you read all of the program information on this page. Our programs are quite adventurous, and we find that travelers who review the full trip details are happier with their experiences.

      Trip Notes & Expectations

      ACCOMMODATION

      Our program fees are based on double-occupancy accommodation (see "Single Travelers" below if you do not have a travel companion and would be interested in a private room). Our accommodations are selected for safety, cleanliness, and convenient locations. While they are comfortable and well-suited for group travel, they are generally simple rather than luxury properties in order to keep the program affordable. Single/Private Room: Single-room accommodations in European hotels are often smaller, and may not be to the same service level as double-occupancy rooms.

      TRANSPORTATION

      We use a mix of transportation that gets our guests from location to location safely. Sometimes you will have full days and nights of transportation as our trips tend to cover a lot of ground. The transportation will often be an adventure in itself.

      ACTIVITY LEVEL & PACE

      Please make sure you have thoroughly read the itinerary and can handle the group activities. This trip includes plenty of walking and some light hiking, and requires at least an average level of fitness. On the more active days, expect to walk quite a bit. In the cities, you can split apart from the group to go at your own pace. We recommend always carrying snacks with you. Meals can sometimes be far apart.

      LUGGAGE

      In Europe, it can be rare to find elevators in train stations, hotels, or other public places. We use some public transport on this trip, which means you will need to carry your luggage from place to place and possibly up multiple flights of stairs. You will also need to be able to stow your luggage safely on trains and buses. You should be able to comfortably walk for 10-30 minutes at a time with your luggage. It is essential, therefore, that you pack light and bring luggage that is compact and lightweight. Carrying your luggage remains your responsibility at all times.

      LOCAL GUIDES

      In Europe, all guiding is based around local guides, all of whom are licensed to work only in a particular city. As such, our leaders are able to provide orientation walks that will show you the layout of each town and city as well as the location of local services such as post offices and laundromats, but are legally unable to share historical facts and figures in public places. Your tour leader will be able to help you find a local guided tour in each location if you would like one.

      GROUP LEADER

      All GEEO programs are led by a G Adventures Chief Experience Officer (CEO), whose role is to take the hassle out of travel and help you get the most from your trip. They’ll share information about the places you visit, suggest activities and restaurants, and introduce you to our local friends. While not traditional guides, CEOs have broad knowledge of the region’s history, culture, and daily life. On some excursions, local guides are used for deeper insight.

      Single Travelers
      Traveling solo? You’re in good company—about half of our participants do the same. Shared room by default. The program fee covers one person in a twin room. We’ll pair you with a roommate of the same gender if you don’t have a travel companion. Want a private room? Most trips offer a “My Own Room” (single-supplement) upgrade.       Packing List
      See our blog post of staff-recommended gear to help you pack for your upcoming travels. You must be able to carry your own luggage—up stairs, on and off of transport, and during 15 to 20 minute walks. Bring one small or medium backpack or rolling bag (22-30lb) and one daypack for daily items. Space is limited on transportation, so oversized bags cannot travel. As you prepare your packing list, we recommend checking average weather conditions for your destination.

      Passports and Visas
      Travelers are responsible for securing all required travel documents and meeting the entry requirements for every country on their itinerary, including applicable transit/layover countries. PASSPORT All travelers must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your trip dates with enough blank pages for stamps. Need to apply or renew? Start here. ENTRY/VISA REQUIREMENTS Visa rules change frequently—always verify the latest requirements on the U.S. State Department Country Information Pages. Non-U.S. passport holders should verify requirements with your country's official government resources. Use the tool below to see entry requirements for your specific itinerary. Entry information below is provided by Sherpa, a third-party service and trusted G Adventures partner. You must search each of your destination countries separately; “Add connection” solely searches transit visa requirements. Additional fees apply if you choose to purchase any services through Sherpa.
      Money Exchange
      Currency: Croatia is part of the Eurozone and uses the common currency, the euro (EUR). For current exchange rates, visit www.xe.com. Credit/Debit Cards: Credit cards (especially Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at many hotels, shops, and restaurants, but not everywhere. Some vendors may also charge an international transaction fee, so check with your bank before you travel. Cash: For small purchases, tipping, or places that don’t take cards, we recommend using ATMs to withdraw local currency while traveling. If you bring U.S. dollars to exchange, the bills must be new, unmarked, and in excellent condition—damaged or older notes are often rejected. Emergency Funds: Bring at least $200 USD (or the equivalent in local currency) in cash for emergencies in case of ATM or card issues.       Tipping
      Tipping is optional but appreciated and goes a long way for the people who look after you on the trip. If you are happy with the service, use these ballpark amounts and adjust as you see fit: - Service providers/Waiters: €1-2 EURfor a snack or 10% of the bill. - Local guides and drivers: €3-5 EUR per person per day. - G Adventures tour leader (CEO): €6-8 EUR per person per day. (We suggest pooling contributions in an envelope and presenting it as a group) Tipping Kitty: On some trips, your CEO may suggest a “tipping kitty” where everyone contributes at the start of the tour, and the CEO uses that pooled amount to tip service providers for the group as a whole (not including your CEO). If your CEO doesn’t mention it and you’d like to use a kitty, we recommend asking about it early in the trip. Your CEO will advise the suggested amount and preferred currency for the kitty.
      Flights
      Wait for official trip confirmation via email from GEEO before booking your flights. Prices tend to be lowest 90–120 days out, but that window varies by route and year. Neither GEEO nor G Adventures bears responsibility for any flights purchased before the trip is confirmed. This program begins in Zagreb and ends in Dubrovnik. Please double-check our itinerary for the date by which you must arrive in Zagreb, which usually means departing the U.S. one day prior. You may want to arrive in Zagreb one or more days early in case you have flight disruptions. You can arrive at any time you choose, but try to make it in time for our 6:00 p.m. Welcome Meeting on Day 1. You can depart from Dubrovnik at any time on the final day of the trip, or stay later to see more of the city.
      Plugs and Converters
      Croatia uses Type C and Type F plugs and the voltage is 220-240V. To use your electronics safely, you’ll need to consider: 1. Adapter (plug shape) Adapts your U.S. plug to fit another type of socket. See our recommended all-in-one travel adapter in our Gear Recommendations post. 2. Converter / transformer (voltage) Steps the outlet voltage down to 120V for U.S. appliances that can’t handle higher voltage. Check what you need: Look on your device's plug or power brick. “Input: 100-240V” works worldwide—you only need a plug adapter. Any range narrower (e.g., "110-120V" or “Input: 120V”) means you need an adapter and a voltage converter to avoid damage. Converters are inexpensive and available online or in travel stores.
      Weather

      • Mestrovic Gallery: 30 HRK

        Filled with the incredible sculptures of Croatian artist and architect Ivan Meštrović, this gallery is beautiful inside and out. The gallery is housed in a villa designed by Meštrović as a summer home which overlooks a wonderful garden where you can view more sculptures and enjoy the breeze from the sea.

      • Bacvice Beach Visit:

        Head to this local hot spot to soak up some rays or play in the calm waters. The sandy shores are often packed with rows of lounge chairs and umbrellas, but it's still a great place to spend some time if you’re looking to cool off. Visit some of the cafes along the waterfront, wade out into the shallow water, or rent a lounge chair and relax.

      • Diocletian's Palace:

        Wander Diocletian's Palace, one of the most imposing Roman ruins in Europe. It took over 10 years to construct and is built of white stone imported from the island of Brač. Exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site is a perfect way to learn more about the history of Split.

      • St Duje Cathedral Visit: 15-40 HRK

        The Cathedral of St Duje is said to be the oldest cathedral in the world, built around 305 AD. Climb up the bell tower for excellent views of Split and the surrounding port area.

      • Trogir Visit:

        Trogir was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 and is home to a number of fascinating historic sights, the best of which is the Cathedral of St Lawrence. Part of the city walls, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, are visible today on the southern side of the city. In the middle of the city wall is the city gate, which was built in 1593. Kamerlengo Fortress is located on the southwestern tip of the island of Trogir – you will see it looming large over this part of town. You can climb up to the height of the walls for good views over the Riva, the Old Town and out to sea.

      • Diocletian's Palace Guided Walk: 1 USD

        Take a guided walk around Diocletian's Palace, one of the most imposing Roman ruins in Europe. It took over 10 years to construct and is built of white stone imported from the island of Brač.

      • Archaeology Museum:

        The Archaeological Museum is the oldest museum in Croatia, built in 1820. It showcases a wide range of artifacts, from prehistoric times through Greek colonization and the Roman, early Christian, and medieval ages.

      • Brač Island Excursion:

        Head to Brač Island to explore its coastline and beaches, and play in crystal clear waters. Have a barbeque lunch on a deserted beach, visit local vineyards, or go for a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean Sea. Be sure to visit the island's well-known Zlanti Rat beach, where the tides, currents, and wind are constantly shifting the shape of the beach.

      • Tuk Tuk Tour to Skywalk: 60-70 USD

        Travel by tuk tuk from the town of Makarska and through the beatiful Biokovo Nature Park to the Skywalk, a glass walkway perched on the side of a cliff. Take in the incredible views in all directions from 1.228m above sea level.

      • Brač Island Excursion: Free

While you slowly creep up the side of the mountain, look down on the winding streets and out to the nearby oceans. If you run out of time during the day hop on the cable car near sunset to see the tints of pink, red, and orange spread across the sky.

      • Rector's Palace: 115 HRK

        Originally built in the 12th century, today's Rector's Palace is a cultural history museum with an intriguing past. A mix of Renaissance and Gothic architecture, it began as the seat of Dubrovnik's rector, becoming a place for merchants and citizens of the republic to gather by the 16th century. In the atrium, you'll find a statue of Miho Pracat, one such merchant who bequeathed his wealth to the city. Wander the galleries and admire paintings, sculptures and furniture from Croatia's past. Today the courtyard is a venue for music and cultural performances - and is often used as a filming location for shows such as Game of Thrones.

      • Museum of Croatian War of Independence: 5 EUR

        Hop in a cable car to the top of Mount Srd and take in a bird's eye view of the walled city of Dubrovnik. Admire the vistas surrounding this ancient fortress perched above the Adriatic Sea, then make your way to the Croatian War of Independence Museum housed in a wing of Fort Imperial. Built to commemorate the war which lasted from 1991-1995, find artifacts such as documents, photos, military equipment, maps and other everyday objects from Croatians who lived through the siege. Pause for a moment at the memorial plaque, engraved with the names of those who died defending the city.

      • War Photography Museum: 10 EUR

        The War Photo Limited gallery displays exhibits from leading photojournalists who cover recent and present conflicts across the world. Curated by photographer Wade Goddard, who covered the Balkan wars in the 1990s, the gallery is spread over two floors and aims to raise public awareness on the injustices and effects of war.

      • Dubrovnik City Wall Walk: 50 EUR

        Opt to take a walking tour or head out on your own to explore the city's ancient walls. See highlights along the way that include Fort Minceta, Fort St. John, Fort Lawrence, Fort Revelin, and St. Luke’s Tower.
