Arrive at any time. There are no planned activities until the Welcome Meeting in the evening. The tour starts in Berlin, and the nearest airport is Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) We recommend arriving a day early to explore this world-renowned city more fully, as well as adjust to the time zone, and buffer against flight delays. We can book additional nights for you in Warsaw before the program begins. Hotel Check-in and Welcome Meeting Hotel check-in is normally between 2–3 p.m. Check with reception for the exact time and location of the group welcome meeting, typically between 6–7 p.m. Please make every effort to attend this meeting. If you're running late, send a message in the group WhatsApp or call the emergency number on your trip voucher so that your tour leader can let you know where and when to meet the group. After the meeting, you might choose to get dinner at a nearby restaurant with your traveling companions and your tour leader to further get to know one another.

      • Taxi/Uber/Bolt: (35-70 PLN / ~€8-17 | ~20min) Taxis are available at the airport. Uber and Bolt are also available and typically cheaper—check your app for exact pricing.
      • Bus: Take route 175 to Plac Zawiszy 03, then walk 10-12 minutes to the hotel. Purchase tickets at machines before boarding or via mobile app. Note: Other bus routes require multiple transfers and take significantly longer (~1.5-2hrs).
Accommodation: Holiday Inn Express Warsaw The Hub (or similar) * To confirm the hotel that your group will be using, please reach out to us or check your service voucher.

Wave goodbye to Warsaw and board a train bound for Gdansk, travelling through the picturesque Polish countryside. After we arrive at the hotel you will have some free time. You'll then explore Gdansk with a local guide on a 1.5-hour-long tour, discovering the magnificent old town composed of imposing architecture and impressive city gates. Take in the main City Hall, Neptune fountain, and St. Mary's Church, the third largest brick church in the world. Finish up at the waterfront quays that mark the end of the famous long market square. In total, you will walk about 2 kilometers on this city tour. Approximate travel time: 3.5 hrs by train Accommodation: Ibis Gdansk Stare Miasto (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Set off in the morning with your tour leader for a short transit ride to Sopot, a seaside resort city situated on the Baltic Sea that is famous for its long wooden pier and sandy beaches. Witness the surreal Crooked House, modelled after fairytale drawings, and wander down Monte Cassino, Sopot's pedestrian street, or sample local specialties at one of the many shops and cafes speckled throughout the city. Afterwards, return to Gdansk to enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure, continuing to explore or relax. Approximate travel time: 40 minutes by public transport Accommodation: Ibis Gdansk Stare Miasto (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Set off again by train heading south to the city of Wroclaw. In the afternoon, head out on foot with your tour leader to see the city's main sights and see why it is sometimes referred to as the Venice of Poland. The walk will last approximately an hour, covering 2 kilometers, and stops include the Battle of Raclawice panorama, the Gothic Old Town Hall, Market Square with its iconic astronomical clock, and the numerous bridges leading to Cathedral Island. Take the rest of the day at leisure to relax or explore on your own. In the evening, you may consider getting a nightcap at Piwnica Swidnicka. Established in 1273, Piwnica Swidnicka is considered to be one of the oldest city inn and beer cellar in Europe. The space exudes history and the name was borrowed from Świdnica, a nearby city, who delivered beer to the cellar in the Middle Ages. Choose to enjoy a local brew and enjoy the well-appointed ambiance. Approximate travel time: 4.5 hrs by train Accommodation: Kamienica Pod Aniołami (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Today is a free day in Wroclaw. Choose to wander the city and explore its historical monuments and beautiful architecture, or perhaps take an excursion through the Silesian heartland to the wooden churches of peace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a private organ concert.
Accommodation: Kamienica Pod Aniołami (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Depart by train and travel through the countryside toward Krakow. Upon arrival, enjoy some time on your own for lunch before joining a local guide on a walking tour of the city's highlights. Visit the iconic squares and lanes of Krakow. Walk to the old town to view the huge bustling Market Square, pass by the Museum Czartoryski (which hosts an original DaVinci!) and the splendid medieval city gate. Stop at stately St. Mary's Church with its tall brick tower overlooking the square, where you can listen to the trumpeter and his legend. Later, stop at the University, where Nicolaus Copernicus made his observations, then end your tour up at the 16th century Wawel Royal Castle. Afterwards, enjoy a cooking class where you will learn the art of Obwarzanki, a parboiled dough ring similar to a bagel and a part of Krakow's history for over 600 years. The dough is rolled into a string, twisted, boiled, then baked, and typically topped with poppyseeds, salt, and sesame seeds. Sample your creation just as kings and knights from medieval times have done in years past. The remainder of the evening is free. Approximate travel time: 3 hrs by train Accommodation: Globtroter Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Take a free day to explore Kraków. There is a lot to do and see in Krakow. You can also choose to pre-book a day trip with us to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The site of this former Nazi concentration camp embodies terror, tragedy, inhumanity and the survival of will. Today the museum stands testament to the inconceivable atrocities of the Holocaust and the extermination of at least 1.1 million prisoners, most of whom were Jewish, during the Second World War. Our 7-hour guided tour stops at the former Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau and includes admission to the museum. During the drive, which takes around 45 minutes each way, watch a short documentary about the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau to provide some historical context. For some of the history that makes Kraków so famous, visit the former Jewish district with its seven synagogues and which was used as the location for filming the movie Schindler’s List. Three gigantic Gothic churches and more than 800 pubs are huddled in nooks and alleyways here, where time slows down. Another option is taking a stroll up Wawel Hill (or catch a ride on a horse and carriage) to 16th-century Wawel Castle. Roam the gardens or the museum featuring exhibitions that give you some insight into life as a royal, such as Royal Private Apartments and the Crown Treasury and Armory. If you can tear yourself away from the charms of Kraków, make a visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mines (roughly 79 PLN per person), located only a short distance away. Built in the 13th century, these mines produced table salt until 2007, making it one of the world's oldest salt mines. Head deep into an underground network of tunnels and chambers some 135m (443 ft) below the surface. Visit the Blessed King's Chapel, a salt cathedral carved by miners, complete with elaborate chandeliers and sculptures. You may want to end your day embracing Polish social traditions in one of Kraków’s many cellar restaurants and pubs. Dive into the thriving social scene over a few vodkas in one of these cheerful establishments, Zubrowka (Bison Grass Vodka) is a must! Accommodation: Globtroter Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

There are no planned activities today, so you may depart at any time. The tour ends in Krakow, and the nearest airport is Krakow John Paul II International Airport (KRK) in Balice, whichis about 11 km west of the city center. If you wish to extend your stay in Krakow, consider booking post-tour accommodation with us. Please note that check-out time from the hotel is usually mid-morning, but luggage storage services are available at the reception desk. Want more adventure? Book two or more GEEO programs in the same school year and receive a discount! GEEO will give you 10% off of the lesser value program(s) (up to 3 programs per year). Their tours are open to the general public and not designed specifically for educators, but we can still offer you and your travel companions a discounted educator price on any additional tours that you book. Meals included: Breakfast

*Itinerary Disclaimer: While it is our intention to adhere to the routes described on our website, there is a certain amount of flexibility built into the itinerary and on occasion it may be necessary, or desirable, to make alterations. The itinerary is brief, as we never know exactly where our journey will take us. Due to our style of travel and the regions we visit, travel can be unpredictable. The information on our website is a general guide to the tour and region, and any mention of specific destinations or wildlife is by no means a guarantee that they will be visited or encountered. Additionally, any travel times listed are approximations only and subject to vary due to local circumstances.

      Details

      Important

Before you decide to travel with GEEO, it is important that you read all of the program information on this page. Our programs are quite adventurous, and we find that travelers who review the full trip details are happier with their experiences.

      Trip Notes & Expectations

      ACCOMMODATION

Our program fees are based on double-occupancy accommodation (see "Single Travelers" below if you do not have a travel companion and would be interested in a private room). Our accommodations are chosen to provide a safe, conveniently located place to sleep. While you may be pleasantly surprised, please don't expect luxury, as we prioritize keeping our programs affordable. Please be aware that properties we stay in with only two stories may not have elevators installed and climbing the stairs with your luggage will be necessary.

Single room accommodations in European hotels are often smaller, and may not be to the same service level as double-occupancy rooms. Krakow Hotel: Our accommodation in Krakow is a comfortable and modern guest house with single, double/twin, and triple rooms. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms. The location and the homely welcome are unbeatable!

      AIR CONDITIONING

Some of the hotels we use on this trip do not have air conditioning. Our partner G Adventures adjusts hotels based on customer feedback and, according to them, the hotels they have chosen should be a comfortable temperature at night. If you have any hot nights where the room was uncomfortable, please let us know right away.

      LUGGAGE

In Europe, it can be rare to find elevators in train stations, hotels, or other public places. We use public transport on this trip, which means you will need to carry your luggage from platform to platform, in and out of trains and buses, etc., and also possibly up several flights of stairs. You will also need to be able to stow your luggage safely on trains and buses. You should be able to comfortably walk for 10-30 minutes at a time with your luggage. It is essential, therefore, that you pack light and bring luggage that is compact and lightweight . The carrying of your luggage remains your responsibility at all times.

      ACTIVITY LEVEL & PACE

This trip has a light activity level compared to many of our programs and is suitable for most fitness levels, however, the heat of the summer can make it quite exhausting. Please know in advance that you will see a lot, but this isn't a relaxing vacation. In the cities, you can split apart from the group to go at your own pace. Getting on and off trains and walking with luggage requires some physical effort. We recommend always carrying snacks with you. Meals can sometimes be far apart.

Walking Tours: The walking tours on this trip are often on cobblestone roads at steep grades and can last several hours in the heat of the summer. Feel free to opt-out of these walking tours if you wish, as they can be physically very taxing. In some cases, on the other side of the coin, they may move a bit too slow for you. If you have a map, a travel app, or a guidebook, feel free to go off on your own. GEEO wants you to have the experience you desire, and sometimes that means separating yourself from the group.

      LOCAL GUIDES

In Europe, all guiding is based around local guides, all of whom are licensed to work only in a particular city. As such, our leaders are able to provide orientation walks that will show you the layout of each town and city, as well as the location of local services such as post offices and laundromats but, are unable to legally share historical facts and figures in public places. Your tour leader will be able to help you find a local guided tour in each location if you would like one. We use local guides at Gdańsk and Krakow where we think more specific knowledge will add to the enjoyment of the places we are visiting.

      TRANSPORTATION

Intercity transport on this trip will be by local train. The train system in Poland is generally good, but traveling by public transport can involve delays and frustrations, and we ask you to keep this in mind.

      FREE TIME

This program has some free time in each location, with few activities included as part of the tour. This allows participants to choose how to spend their time exploring each destination. Your group leader is available to help with plans.

      PRE-BOOKING ACTIVITIES

Past participants have told us that they were unable to visit Schindler's factory in Krakow because the tickets were sold out . We recommend booking these in advance online. To visit Schindler's Factory you can purchase tickets here . Please use our WhatsApp group if you want to coordinate with others in your group to schedule visits to these sights together.

      GROUP LEADER

All GEEO programs are led by a G Adventures Chief Experience Officer (CEO), whose role is to take the hassle out of travel and help you get the most from your trip. They’ll share information about the places you visit, suggest activities and restaurants, and introduce you to our local friends. While not traditional guides, CEOs have broad knowledge of the region’s history, culture, and daily life. On some excursions, local guides are used for deeper insight.

      Packing List
See our blog post of staff-recommended gear to help you pack for your upcoming travels. You must be able to carry your own luggage—up stairs, on and off of transport, and during 15 to 20 minute walks. Bring one small or medium backpack or rolling bag (22-30lb) and one daypack for daily items. Space is limited on transportation, so oversized bags cannot travel. As you prepare your packing list, we recommend checking average weather conditions for your destination on a site like Weather Spark for the time of year you will be traveling.

      Passports and Visas
Travelers are responsible for securing all required travel documents and meeting the entry requirements for every country on their itinerary, including applicable transit/layover countries.  PASSPORT  All travelers must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your trip dates with enough blank pages for stamps. Need to apply or renew? Start here. ENTRY/VISA REQUIREMENTS  Visa rules change frequently—always verify the latest requirements on the U.S. State Department Country Information Pages. Non-U.S. passport holders should verify requirements with your country's official government resources. Use the tool below to see entry requirements for your specific itinerary.  Entry information below is provided by Sherpa, a third-party service and trusted G Adventures partner. You must search each of your destination countries separately; “Add connection” solely searches transit visa requirements. Additional fees apply if you choose to purchase any services through Sherpa.
      Money Exchange
Currency: The local currency on this trip is the Polish Złoty (PLN). For current exchange rates, visit www.xe.com. Credit/Debit Cards: Credit cards (especially Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at many hotels, shops, and restaurants, but not everywhere. Some vendors may also charge an international transaction fee, so check with your bank before you travel. Cash: For small purchases, tipping, or places that don’t take cards, we recommend using ATMs to withdraw local currency while traveling. If you bring U.S. dollars to exchange, the bills must be new, unmarked, and in excellent condition—damaged or older notes are often rejected. Emergency Funds: Bring at least $200 USD (or the equivalent in local currency) in cash for emergencies in case of ATM or card issues. Always carry more rather than less to avoid feeling short of funds while traveling. See the Estimated Trip Costs section at the bottom of this page for budgeting guidance. For more advice, see our post, Smart Travel Finances: Your Guide to Money, ATMs, Fees, and Safety Abroad
      Tipping
Tipping is optional but appreciated and goes a long way for the people who look after you on the trip. If you are happy with the service, use these ballpark amounts and adjust as you see fit: - Service providers/Waiters: 4-8 PLN for snacks or 10% of the bill. - Local guides and drivers: 12-20 PLN per person per day. - G Adventures tour leader (CEO): 85-125 PLN per person per week. (We suggest pooling contributions in an envelope and presenting it as a group) Tipping Kitty: On some trips, your CEO may suggest a “tipping kitty” where everyone contributes at the start of the tour, and the CEO uses that pooled amount to tip service providers for the group as a whole (not including your CEO). If your CEO doesn’t mention it and you’d like to use a kitty, we recommend asking about it early in the trip. Your CEO will advise the suggested amount and preferred currency for the kitty.
      Flights
Wait for official trip confirmation via email from GEEO before booking your flights. Prices tend to be lowest 90–120 days out, but that window varies by route and year. Neither GEEO nor G Adventures bear responsibility for any flights purchased before the trip is confirmed. This program begins in Warsaw and ends in Krakow. Please double-check our itinerary for the date by which you must arrive in Warsaw, which usually means departing the U.S. one day prior. You may want to arrive in Europe one or more days early in case you have flight disruptions. You can arrive at any time you choose, but try to make it in time for our 6:00 p.m. Welcome Meeting on Day 1. You can depart from Krakow at any time on the final day of the trip, or stay later to see more of the city.
      Plugs and Converters
Poland uses Type C plugs and the voltage is 220-240V. To use your electronics safely, you’ll need to consider: 1. Adapter (plug shape) Adapts your U.S. plug to fit another type of socket. See our recommended all-in-one travel adapter in our Gear Recommendations post. 2. Converter / transformer (voltage) Steps the outlet voltage down to 120V for U.S. appliances that can’t handle higher voltage. How to know which you need: Look at the fine print on the plug or power brick. An “Input 100-240 V” means the device is dual-voltage and works worldwide with only an adapter—phones, laptops, and most camera chargers fall into this category. If the label shows “Input 120 V” (hair dryers, curling irons, some shavers), it could be damaged on high voltage. Pack both an adapter and a travel voltage converter. Converters are inexpensive and sold online or in the travel aisle of many stores.
      Weather
July is generally considered the warmest month in Poland, characterized by pleasant daytime temperatures in the 70s and nights in the 50s. However, it can also be the wettest and most humid month of the year.
      Advice From Past Participants
"ATMs worked very well for me, and I essentially did not need to bring cash. I would bring very little next time. Using a credit card for meals worked out in most places." "Don't feel as if you need to stick with the group the entire time once you arrive in the cities. Explore at our own pace!" "Too many people in the group did not read the portion that stated we were supposed to be able to carry our own luggage and would be walking with the luggage from train stations to hotels. It was frustrating to listen to complaints about having to do things that were clearly stated as requirements." "Be prepared for noise levels at night. This is Europe. In general, they go out later at night and stay out later than we do in the U.S. There will be noise – especially if you stay closer to the city/town center or square."

      WARSAWGDAŃSKWROCŁAWKRAKÓW
      WARSAW
Warsaw Old Town (Stare Miasto): Free

Warsaw’s Old Town is one of the city’s most charming areas. Keep in mind over 85% of Warsaw’s 13th-century Old Town was destroyed by the Nazis, so much of what you will see are reconstructed buildings. Make sure you visit Old Town Market Square, Castle Square, Warsaw Barbican, Sigismund’s Column, St. John’s Archcathedral, Kanonia Square, and the Mermaid Statue.

      St. Anne’s Church: 10 PLN

Also located in Old Town, the view from St Anne's Bell Tower is among the best in the city.

      Warsaw Royal Castle: 60-140 PLN

The Royal Castle served as the primary residence of Polish kings from the 16th to the 18th century. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is now a museum and located right in the heart of Castle Square in Warsaw’s Old Town. There are multiple sections of the castle to visit, so the cost of the ticket depends on which sections you choose.

      Łazienki Park: Free

A must-see in Warsaw is Łazienki Park, the city’s largest park. The park was once the royal garden of King Stanisław II Augustus, who built his summer residence there. Highlights of the park include a palace that appears to float on a lake, an orangery that is now an art gallery with sculptures and paintings, as well as a monument dedicated to the famous composer Frédéric Chopin

      Warsaw Rising Museum: 30 PLN

The Warsaw Rising Museum is dedicated to the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. It was a pivotal World War II event where Polish resistance fighters attempted to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. This museum is an essential visit for anyone interested in Polish history or the broader history of Warsaw.

Roof Gardens of University of Warsaw Library: Free

The University of Warsaw Library Building has won numerous architectural awards, but the true highlight is the stunning rooftop gardens.

Palace of Culture and Science: 28 PLN

The Palace of Culture and Science is one of Warsaw’s most iconic landmarks. At 237 metres (778 feet), it’s the second tallest in the country, only overtaken by the Varso Tower in 2022. Originally gifted by Stalin back in 1955, the building was meant to show Soviet support for Poland. There is a viewing platfrom at the top, but the views are of the modern commerical area of Warsaw, not Old Town.

      Polish Vodka Museum: 70 PLN

The museum is housed in a restored building that was once part of the Koneser Vodka Distillery, which dates back to the late 19th century.

Wilanów Palace: 35 PLN plus transportation costs

Located about 6 miles out of the city, this 17th-century palace served as a summer residence for King Jan III Sobieski. The palace is about 55 minutes by bus or 25 minutes by rideshare or taxi from Old Town.

      GDAŃSK
Main Town Hall - Museum of Gdansk: Free

This Gothic and Renaissance building features one of the most beautiful Renaissance halls in Northern Europe. In the summertime, the tower offers a panoramic view of Gdańsk.

St. Mary’s Church: Free, but 18 PLN for tower viewpoint
