      Overview

Decades after the fall of communism, the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia remain a mystery to most travelers. We’re not complaining, though; more mystery means fewer crowds and an easier time getting to know these fantastic countries. Beginning in charming cobblestoned Vilnius and ending in beautiful Helsinki, this trip gets to the very heart of the region. Get an up-close glimpse of Riga’s castles and art district, experience rural life in Estonia, and venture into the fortresses and medieval architecture of Tallinn before crossing to Finland by ferry. Visit the Baltics with us, all while earning professional development credit with other educators.

This program has an optional one-day seminar on the final day that we highly encourage our participants to join. The seminar is being run by the Council for Creative Education and the focus is on the Finnish education system and their teaching methods. More details can be found in this document.

Arrive at any time. There are no planned activities until the Welcome Meeting in the evening. The tour starts in Vilnius, and the city's airport is Vilnius Airport (VNO). Consider arriving 1-2 days early to explore the city, adjust to the time zone, and buffer against flight delays. We can book extra hotel nights for you before the trip. Hotel Check-in and Welcome Meeting Hotel check-in is normally between 2-3pm. Check with reception for the exact time and location of the group welcome meeting, typically between 6-7pm. Please make every effort to attend this meeting. If you're running late, send a message in the group WhatsApp or call the emergency number on your trip voucher so your tour leader can let you know where and when to meet the group. After the meeting, you might choose to get dinner at a nearby restaurant with your traveling companions and your tour leader to further get to know one another. Multi-faceted, puzzling, and a heady mix of old and new, Vilnius has all the glories of a royal past, the troubling reminders of wartime and Communist atrocities, and a vibrant forward-looking perspective.

We start the day with a visit to the late 14th-century Trakai Castle, which is located about 45 minutes out of town by bus. Getting out of the capital and visiting this historic treasure is a great way to experience a little more of Lithuania. After returning to Vilnius, you have the remainder of the afternoon to explore this lovely city. Some highlights you might want to check out are the Frank Zappa monument, the breakaway Republic of Uzupis, a giant egg statue, the Gediminas tower and castle museum, and/or the KGB Museum. Approximate travel time: 1.5 hours by local bus Accommodation: Comfort Hotel LT Rock'N'Roll Vilnius (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

This morning, we travel by private vehicle to Klaipeda, one of the oldest cities in Lithuania, next to the northern tip of the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit. The Curonian Spit is a long, thin sandbar that runs from Klaipeda in Lithuania to Kaliningrad, Russia's westernmost oblast. It separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Join an orientation walk led by your tour leader and visit the famous sights and many interesting sculptures that make Klaipeda unique. Approximate travel time: 5-6 hrs by private vehicle Accommodation: Dange Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Spend the whole day today exploring the Curonian Spit, located between Klaipeda and Nida. The Curonian Spit is a long, thin sand bar dotted with dunes that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. This spit is shared by Lithuania and Kaliningrad, Russia's westernmost oblast. The tour will start in the morning with a 25-minute ferry ride. After arriving, drive up to Nida along the peninsula, making brief stops at Amber Bay, the Grey Herons and Cormorants Colony, and the Dead Dunes. We will also walk along the Hill of Witches, which used to be the site of dancing and gathering during Pagan festivals. Now, the hills are dotted with wooden statues created by local artists, depicting witches, dragons, and the elements. Some of the statues tell stories of the local legends and folklore, bringing the region to life with their intricate carvings. Midday, we will spend a few hours of free time in Nida where you can grab lunch and opt to see the Fisherman Museum and Nida Lighthouse if time allows. Later in the day, we will visit the Parnidis Dune and Sun Clock in Nida before traveling back to Klaipeda for the evening. There will be stops in both directions for photo opportunities. The tour will last 7 hours in total with 3 hours total of driving time. Approximate travel time: 3 hrs by private vehicle Accommodation: Dange Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Depart Klaipeda this morning and visit the Hill of Crosses, a religiously, culturally, and politically significant site in Lithuania. Learn about the Lithuanian tradition of cross-crafting, listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Then, cross the border into Latvia and head to the capital, Riga. Options for this charming city include visiting the Occupation Museum, the Riga Art Nouveau Centre, Riga Castle, the Andrejsala artists' district, or simply wandering the cobblestone streets. Explore the narrow streets on foot and get better acquainted with the city known as "the Paris of the East." Opt to visit St. Peter's Church, where you can ascend the spire by lift for a fantastic view over the city. The Andrejsala neighborhood is an industrial port area just outside the city. It has recently developed into a cultural hub with art and entertainment areas, workshops, galleries, and cafés. Approximate travel time: 4.5 - 5.5 hrs by private vehicle Accommodation: A1 Hotel Riga (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

This morning, we visit some of the neighborhoods and sights on a guided tour around Riga and learn about the history of this 800-year-old city. We will visit the Central Market to pick up some delicacies for lunch. You will have the afternoon free to continue exploring the city. One option is visiting the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. This museum is free and is dedicated to portraying what life was like in Latvia during the three periods of occupation. Learn about life under Soviet and Nazi rule and how Latvians regained their freedom in 1991. See our optional activities list further below for more places you can visit in your free time. Accommodation: A1 Hotel Riga (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch

Today, we cross the border to Estonia for a truly local experience with a 3-night stay on a farm in Saaremaa. Over the next three nights, savor farm-to-table dinners specially prepared by your host family. This remote island in the Baltic Sea has unique traditions and culture. Thatched roof houses, stone walls, and windmills make up this fairytale landscape. Some of the optional activities you might undertake include canoeing on the Nasva river, fishing, or island visits. You might also consider traveling into the capital of Saaremaa, Kuressaare, for a folk evening with traditional music. Approximate travel time: 2.5-3 hrs by local bus; .5 hrs by boat Accommodation: Jurna Farmhouse (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast | Dinner

Today, we take a tour of Saaremaa, during which we will visit a group of windmills and try traditional baked goods while sipping on local beer. In the area, you'll find a naturally growing oak forest with rare flora (such as orchids) and a bird-watching platform. You will also visit the Kaali meteorite lake, formed by a meteorite strike around 3,500 years ago. You will have some free time in the afternoon to see more of the area; see our list of optional activities below. Accommodation: Jurna Farmhouse (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast | Dinner

The final day of our stay in Saaremaa is a free one to explore further. Today, you might want to visit some of the churches, some dating back as far as the 1300s while others still have ancient wall frescoes intact. Alternatively, maybe you want to see some of the natural sites, including the lake and the Panga Cliffs. You may also want to visit the beautiful Pühatu Springs. "Pühatu" resembles the word "bottomless" in the Estonian language and describes the seemingly bottomlessness of this vibrant green spring. Locals have been visiting this site for hundreds of years, throwing coins into the pool as offerings for good health and fortune. Accommodation: Jurna Farmhouse (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast | Dinner

Today, we travel to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, where you might fall in love with this medieval town. Together we will visit the Kadriog Palace, which was built by Peter the Great for Catherine I of Russia. Approximate travel time: 4 hrs by private vehicle Accommodation: Rixwell Viru Square Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

Spend a free day exploring this medieval city. Use your free time to visit the Museum of the Occupation, the Dome Church, the open air museum, go sea kayaking, visit the beaches, or relax in a sauna. Please look further below for our optional activities list. Accommodation: Rixwell Viru Square Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

This morning, we travel by ferry to the charming capital city of Finland, Helsinki. We will take an orientation walk before you have the remainder of the day free. Helsinki sits on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. Its central avenue, Mannerheimintie, is flanked by cultural and political institutions, including the National Museum, which traces Finnish history from the Stone Age to the present. Also on Mannerheimintie are the imposing Parliament House and Kiasma, a contemporary art museum. Approximate travel time: 2-2.5 hrs by ferry Accommodation: Clarion Hotel Mestari (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

There are no planned activities today, so you may depart at any time. However, we highly recommend that you consider joining an all-day seminar that our partner, the Council for Creative Education (CCE) Finland, is offering today focused on the Finnish education system. The seminar costs $330, and details can be found here. We believe many schools and educational institutions would be willing to pay for the cost of the seminar, perhaps including the cost for an extra night of accommodation tonight. The tour ends in Helsinki, and the nearest airport is Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL). Please note that check-out time from the hotel is usually mid-morning, but luggage storage services are available at the reception desk. If you wish to extend your stay in Helsinki, consider booking post-tour accommodation with us. Want more adventure? Book two or more GEEO programs in the same school year and receive a discount! GEEO will give you 10% off of the lesser value program(s) (up to 3 programs per year). If you would like to extend your time abroad but don't see another GEEO program that interests you, let us know. We can work with you to find a trip from our tour operator’s much larger catalog. Their tours are open to the general public and not designed specifically for educators, but we can still offer you and your travel companions a discounted educator price on any additional tours that you book. Meals included: Breakfast

*Itinerary Disclaimer: While it is our intention to adhere to the routes described on our website, there is a certain amount of flexibility built into the itinerary and on occasion it may be necessary, or desirable, to make alterations. The itinerary is brief, as we never know exactly where our journey will take us. Due to our style of travel and the regions we visit, travel can be unpredictable. The information on our website is a general guide to the tour and region, and any mention of specific destinations or wildlife is by no means a guarantee that they will be visited or encountered. Additionally, any travel times listed are approximations only and subject to vary due to local circumstances.

      Details

      Important

Before you decide to travel with GEEO, it is important that you read all of the program information on this page. Our programs are quite adventurous, and we find that travelers who review the full trip details are happier with their experiences.

      Trip Notes & Expectations

      ACCOMMODATION

Our program fees are based on double-occupancy accommodation (see "Single Travelers" below if you do not have a travel companion and would be interested in a private room). Our accommodations are chosen to provide a safe, conveniently located place to sleep. While you may be pleasantly surprised, please don't expect luxury, as we prioritize keeping our programs affordable. Important: Single room accommodations in European hotels are often smaller, and may not be to the same service level as double-occupancy rooms.

      TRANSPORTATION

We use a mix of transportation that gets our guests from location to location safely. Sometimes you will have full days and nights of transportation as our trips tend to cover a lot of ground. The transportation will often be an adventure in itself.

      LUGGAGE

In Europe, it can be rare to find elevators in train stations, hotels, or other public places. We use public transport on this trip, which means you will need to carry your luggage in and out of boats and buses, etc., and also possibly up several flights of stairs. You will also need to be able to stow your luggage safely on buses. You should be able to comfortably walk for 10-30 minutes at a time with your luggage. It is essential, therefore, that you pack light and bring luggage that is compact and lightweight. The carrying of your luggage remains your responsibility at all times.

      ACTIVITY LEVEL & PACE

Please read the itinerary carefully to make sure you’re prepared for the group activities, which can include day hikes with your daypack and long sightseeing days. Expect a significant amount of walking on active touring days. You may also need to carry your luggage short distances and get on and off transportation. You should feel comfortable walking for extended periods and navigating varied terrain. In the cities, you can split apart from the group to go at your own pace. We recommend always having snacks with you, as meals can sometimes be far apart.

      FREE TIME

This program has quite a bit of free time in each location, with few activities included as part of the tour. This allows participants to choose how to spend their time exploring each destination. Your group leader is available to help with plans. For ideas, check the “Optional Activities” section at the bottom of this page.

      ORIENTATION WALKS

The orientation walking tours on this trip are often on cobblestone roads at steep grades and can last several hours in the heat of the summer. Feel free to opt-out of these walking tours if you wish, as they can be quite physically taxing. In some cases, on the other side of the coin, they may move a bit too slow for you. If you have a map, a travel app, or a guidebook, feel free to go off on your own. GEEO wants you to have the experience you desire, and sometimes that means separating yourself from the group.

      GROUP LEADER

All GEEO/G Adventures trips are led by a Chief Experience Officer (CEO), whose role is to take the hassle out of travel and help you get the most from your trip. They’ll share information about the places you visit, suggest activities and restaurants, and introduce you to our local friends. While not traditional guides, CEOs have broad knowledge of the region’s history, culture, and daily life. On some excursions, local guides are used for deeper insight—giving you the best of both worlds.

      Packing List
See our blog post of staff recommended gear to help you pack for your upcoming travels. You must be able to carry your own luggage—up stairs, on and off of transport, and during 15 to 20 minute walks. Bring one small or medium backpack or rolling bag (22-30lb) and one daypack for daily items. Space is limited on transportation, so oversized bags cannot travel. As you prepare your packing list, we recommend checking average weather conditions for your destination on a site like Weather Spark for the time of year you will be traveling.

      Passports and Visas
Travelers are responsible for securing all required travel documents and meeting the entry requirements for every country on their itinerary, including applicable transit/layover countries.  PASSPORT  All travelers must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your trip dates with enough blank pages for stamps. Need to apply or renew? Start here. ENTRY/VISA REQUIREMENTS  Visa rules change frequently—always verify the latest requirements on the U.S. State Department Country Information Pages. Non-U.S. passport holders should verify requirements with your country's official government resources. Use the tool below to see entry requirements for your specific itinerary.  Entry information below is provided by Sherpa, a third-party service and trusted G Adventures partner. You must search each of your destination countries separately; “Add connection” solely searches transit visa requirements. Additional fees apply if you choose to purchase any services through Sherpa.
      Money Exchange
Currency: The local currencies on this trip are the Estonian kroon (EEK) in Estonia and the euro (EUR) in Lithuania, Latvia, and Finland. For current exchange rates, visit www.xe.com. Credit/Debit Cards: Credit cards (especially Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at many hotels, shops, and restaurants, but not everywhere. Some vendors may also charge an international transaction fee, so check with your bank before you travel. Cash: For small purchases, tipping, or places that don’t take cards, we recommend using ATMs to withdraw local currency while traveling. If you bring U.S. dollars to exchange, the bills must be new, unmarked, and in excellent condition—damaged or older notes are often rejected. Emergency Funds: Bring at least $200 USD (or the equivalent in local currency) in cash for emergencies in case of ATM or card issues. Always carry more rather than less to avoid feeling short of funds while traveling. See the Estimated Trip Costs section at the bottom of this page for budgeting guidance. For more advice, see our post, Smart Travel Finances: Your Guide to Money, ATMs, Fees, and Safety Abroad
      Tipping
Tipping is optional but appreciated and goes a long way for the people who look after you on the trip. If you are happy with the service, use these ballpark amounts and adjust as you see fit: - Service providers/Waiters: €1-2 EUR for snacks or 10% of the bill. - Local guides and drivers: €3-5 EUR per person per day. - G Adventures tour leader (CEO): €30-40 EUR per person per week. (We suggest pooling contributions in an envelope and presenting it as a group) Tipping Kitty: On some trips, your CEO may suggest a “tipping kitty” where everyone contributes at the start of the tour, and the CEO uses that pooled amount to tip service providers for the group as a whole (not including your CEO). If your CEO doesn’t mention it and you’d like to use a kitty, we recommend asking about it early in the trip. Your CEO will advise the suggested amount and preferred currency for the kitty.
      Flights
Wait for official trip confirmation via email from GEEO before booking your flights. Prices tend to be lowest 90–120 days out, but that window varies by route and year. Neither GEEO nor G Adventures bear responsibility for any flights purchased before the trip is confirmed. This program begins in Vilnius and ends in Helsinki. Please double-check our itinerary for the date by which you must arrive in Vilnius, which usually means departing the U.S. one day prior. You may want to arrive in Europe one or more days early in case you have flight disruptions. You can arrive at any time you choose, but try to make it in time for our 6:00 p.m. Welcome Meeting on Day 1. You can depart from Helsinki at any time on the final day of the trip, or stay later to see more of the city.
      Plugs and Converters
All countries visited use Type C plugs and the voltage is 220-240V. To use your electronics safely, you’ll need to consider: 1. Adapter (plug shape) Adapts your U.S. plug to fit another type of socket. See our recommended all-in-one travel adapter in our Gear Recommendations post. 2. Converter / transformer (voltage) Steps the outlet voltage down to 120V for U.S. appliances that can’t handle higher voltage. How to know which you need: Look at the fine print on the plug or power brick. An “Input 100-240 V” means the device is dual-voltage and works worldwide with only an adapter—phones, laptops, and most camera chargers fall into this category. If the label shows “Input 120 V” (hair dryers, curling irons, some shavers), it could be damaged on high voltage. Pack both an adapter and a travel voltage converter. Converters are inexpensive and sold online or in the travel aisle of many stores.
      Weather
The weather in all of these countries is similar. Summer is very pleasant with daily highs typically ranging from the mid-60s to the 80s F. Make sure you pack some clothes for cooler temperatures at night.
