Water and Food Systems in Turkey

Contributor :

Kim Jones Messex

Action Plan

I teach in an environmental STEAM magnet and our overarching theme across the grade levels is water. I plan to talk to people, take photos, and learn about water management and accessibility. Also, I teach a food: from farm to face elective in my magnet. We study food availability, food justice, and we visit farmers markets to interview farmers, buy produce, and prepare food together. I’ve signed up for the cooking class, and I hope to bring back spices and knowledge of local foods for the area.

Pre-Departure Preparation

Currently, I have a student from Turkey in my class. He completed his first four years of school in Istanbul. His family has invited me to join them for dinner the night before our program begins. He, Ates, has been teaching me a few words in Turkish. I hope to be able to talk to them about local foods, traditions, and other cultural aspects.

Preparation During Travel

I’d like to visit local markets to learn more about culinary traditions and food issues. Also, I’d like to learn more about water availability by talking to people about their experiences.
