Theme and Summary with ‘Hodja and the Hungry Coat’
Contributor :
Taffanie Ketema
Action Plan
I will teach theme and summary using the story of “Hodja and the Hungry Coat”. I will use photos of Ottoman Empire sites and relevant realia that bring the time of Nasreddin Hodja to life for my 5th graders. To include a geography component, students will fill in a blank map of Turkey with key cities/locations.
Pre-Departure Preparation
I will review other American folktales that feature a ‘moral’ figure so I can introduce them to my students and show that these stories exist in all cultures.
Preparation During Travel
I will take photos of relevant sites/locations including artistic representations of Turkish storytelling culture.
