Ataturk’s Reforms: Modernization and Tradition in Turkey
Contributor :

Action Plan
As a global history teacher I want to elevate my students’ understandings of how Kemal Atatürk’s reforms affected the region and its people since the early 1900s. To do so, students will investigate, compare, and contrast tensions between modernization and traditional culture in Turkey under the rule of Kemal Atatürk with artifacts collected from the trip.
Pre-Departure Preparation
I will research the diverse cultures that coexist in the region to broaden my knowledge about Türkiye’s complex society.
Preparation During Travel
Examining events from the point of view of those that experienced the events firsthand helps to understand the feelings, thoughts & attitudes of others. So, during the trip, I will talk to locals and guides to collect personal stories on social norms, gender roles, and the role of authorities and institutions to help my students better comprehend the region and its people. I will also take photographs and videos to use as artifacts in my lessons.
Visiting Kemal Atatürk’s mausoleum will be an opportunity to learn more about his reforms.
