Obesity in the Developing World

Contributor :

Mariel Rancel

Action Plan

During the trip, I will document local diet, health care, and cultural attitudes around health. My students will make connections to these trends and attitudes about health in their own community.

Pre-Departure Preparation

I hope to teach a global public health unit as part of my 12th grade Anatomy and Physiology class. I would like the unit to focus on the increase in chronic diseases like obesity in the developing world as a result of industrialization and cultural shifts around diet, exercise, labor, etc.

Preparation During Travel

Reading about local dietary staples and WHO reports on disease burdens in Vietnam and Cambodia.
