I will take in the museums and sites related to the history of the area. I may also write a journal to keep track of potential personal narrative ideas.
I would like to incorporate the history of the Balkans into some compare/contrast projects or assignments with what we do in social studies. Students learn about the struggles of African-Americans throughout Virginia history. It would be interesting to compare that to minority groups in the Balkan region and some of their marginalization. I would also be interested in having students compare the American Civil War and some of the conflicts in the Balkan region. I might go a different direction and use the trip as the jumping off point for a personal narrative story about a small moment in my life.
I will do some reading on Balkan history.
