Adaptation and Endemic v. Invasive Species

Contributor :

Jule Rosen

Action Plan

During the trip, I will gather some materials about the various species native to the islands. I will also collect information from the Charles Darwin Research Station, and plan on taking pictures of some of these species to share with my students.

Pre-Departure Preparation

As a high school biology teacher, I plan on teaching my students about the ecological concept of endemic species and how the introduction of invasive species is endangering the biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. I will also incorporate Charles Darwin's observations of various species and how they appear to have adapted to this isolated area over a long period of time. As a class, we will discuss the species presently in danger due to invasive species and will use pictures, fields guides, video clips, and other research materials to examine this problem.

Preparation During Travel

Prior to departure, I will research the endemic species of the Galapagos Islands and the invasive species that are endangering them.
