Legacy of Colonialism

Contributor :

Maria Valentin

Action Plan

I will engage in conversations with individuals, take lots of pictures, try to obtain English-language periodicals and follow Moroccan news on line during my trip.

Pre-Departure Preparation

I’m interested in looking at the legacy of colonialism in Morocco for my World History II students. I’m also interested in looking at the global issues that the people of Morocco face (climate change / food security) and finally, how Morocco forges national identity with its diverse groups: Berber, Muslim, Arab, Christian, etc. I will develop a few lessons on these topics and/or add photos / interviews / anecdotal information from Morocco to lessons that I already have developed.

Preparation During Travel

I am pretty familiar with Morocco’s colonial history but I will do some reading on its cultural diversity. I’m also attending a week-long course at Yale on climate change and food security.
